University of Cincinnati Medical Center opened in 1823 as the country’s first teaching hospital, the mission of the hospital was to provide care for the aged, indigent and orphaned. As the hospital approaches their 200th anniversary the UC Health system saw the need to plan for the future, both near and long term. Lack of master planning in the last half century has had the campus growing in many directions. The campus is pushing physical boundaries and administration needed to understand growth opportunities that aligned with their strategic plan. This project studied the University of Cincinnati Medical Center campus and the recently acquired UC Health Business Center campus in order to give the health system direction for future growth.
The five month study included multiple master planning methodologies:
Facility assessments on over 40 buildings
Campus assessment of land ownership and utilization
Meetings with department of transportation on local traffic flow projects that impact access
Interviews with 42 executive and leadership personnel
Interviews with neighborhood partners such as the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center
Design charettes with multiple leadership groups
Goals exercise with Policy Council
Presentations and approvals from multiple committees
The resulting deliverable provided both near and long-term master plans for the campus and an implementation plan to carry out facility projects that meet the goals of the health system's strategic plan.
